The best beach in the world can now officially be found on Hawaii as the winner of this year’s eagerly awaited America’s Best Beaches Awards goes to Hanalei Bay on the Hawaiian island of Kauai. The much-lauded Dr Stephen Leatherman (a.k.a. ‘Dr Beach’) bestowed upon this spectacular crescent-shaped beach, found on Kauai’s north coast, the top spot for 2009 due to its cleanliness and beauty. The popular spot attracts all kinds of tourists from families through honeymooners to those in their golden years.
Thanks to its exotic palm trees, three kilometres of white sand and its dazzling backdrop of waterfalls, which offer something for every kind of lover of landscapes, Hanalei Bay has been the inspiration for paintings, photo shoots and films for over 50 years, including the 1958 musical, South Pacific.
Hanalei Bay has been a previous contestant in Dr Beach’s awards but somehow, with such stiff competition, it didn’t win; however, 2009 was the year when it finally received recognition as probably the best beach in the world, gaining the considerable honor of being named the ultimate beach in the USA beating off Siesta Beach in Florida and Cooper Beach in New York, amongst others.
This relatively undiscovered area of Hawaii is perfect for swimming, snorkelling and surfing. The clear emerald waters off what many consider best beach in the world are ideal during summer, whilst the surf tends to pick up at other times of year. The relaxed village of Hanalei offers simple dining and drinking spots, with one of the best views of the beach from the Westin Princeville Ocean Resort Villas.
Dr Beach is America’s most quoted authority on beaches so he should recognize best beach in the world when he sees it. As the Director of the Florida International University’s Laboratory for Coastal Research, he is certainly considered the expert of what makes a beach ‘the best’.
The hotly-contested awards are eagerly awaited by travellers and tourism officials across the USA and worldwide each year. Past winners include Hanauma Bay on Oahu and Fleming Beach on Maui, as well as North Beach in Florida and Ocracoke Beach in North Carolina. The awards began in 1989 and once a beach is awarded first place, it is ‘retired’ from future lists.
Fifty criteria are used to evaluate the beaches, which include water and sand quality, safety, facilities and environmental management. What makes Dr Beach’s selections so unique is his expertise as a coastal scientist with more than 30 years of experience studying storm impacts, erosion and ways to improve beach health and safety so you’re not talking about purely cosmetic reasons for judging best beach in the world.
Other spectacular beaches can also be found on Maui with its 120 miles of coastline and over 30 miles of beautiful white, black and red sand beaches: Oahu with the world famous Waikiki beach and Big Island with its lush vegetation and secluded beach coves could all be worthy winners of the title of best beach in the world.
When considering Hawaii, many people visualise a group of islands that are beautiful, welcoming and warm to the senses. Other qualities that often come to mind include sugar cane and macadamia nut fields, fiery volcanoes and some of the best surfing in the world.
While these are all quintessential notions and images of Hawaii, each island in the group holds its own unique visual characteristics and cultural offerings, thus making Hawaii an ideal getaway destination for every type of holidaymaker.
If, for instance, you’re travelling to Hawaii primarily to dive, snorkel, sunbathe and go to luaus (a Hawaiian feast), Maui might be the perfect destination for you. The island of Maui offers a perfect balance between the classic offerings of a tropical island – such as beautiful beaches and a serene setting, as well as common tourist attractions such as bars and restaurants. However, if you want to enjoy island qualities alongside city life and excitement, Oahu or the Big Island might be a better option.
Oahu and Big Island are home to larger cities and have much more to offer those in search of a lively nightlife. The Big Island is also renowned for one of Hawaii’s most quintessential features – active volcanoes. The Big Island is made up of five shield volcanoes – Kohala, Mauna Kea, Mauna Loa, Kilauea and Hualalai. It is also home to the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, one of Hawaii’s biggest attractions.
If you prefer to spend your Hawaiian holiday submerged in as much nature as possible, Kauai is by far the best holiday spot for you. Called the “Garden Isle”, Kauai is the most untouched of any of Hawaii’s islands. The majority of the island does not have any roads and it’s very common to see undisturbed beauty in every direction. The island of Kauai is also home to the Na Pali Coast, which encompasses 6,175 acres of land and is located on the northwest side of the island. Many tourists will hike the Na Pali coastal cliffs, while others might take a raft ride in the water alongside the cliffs. Another popular activity when visiting Kauai is to take a helicopter ride over its impressive coastline.
So, while Hawaii’s islands are collectively known for their superb “aloha” hospitality, stunning natural beauty and a range of activities, each island has a unique set of features to offer, making Hawaii holidays unforgettable, whichever island you choose.
A trip to Hawaii would be a trailer of paradise. A moment where you have the golden opportunity to swim, snorkel, surf, scuba dive, sail, golf at the world class golf courses, enjoy dinner cruises, a variety of cultural events, submarine traveling, helicopter sightseeing and have the most exotic set up, who would not want to go to Hawaii and take these happenings all in one place.

Married in Hawaii

Deciding on a location is the first step involved in planning a Hawaii wedding. If the bride has her heart set on a Hawaiian wedding, this is not a hard decision. Choose a destination that has wedding services already provided. I would personally recommend Above Heaven’s Gate in Oahu, Hawaii.
The Ol’ Capt. Howie has some spectacular off-the–beaten-path locations for your Hawaii beach weddings, any time of the day. If you are staying in Waikiki or at one of the hotels, you better plan to get out of Dodge. Unless you like crowded beaches fronting big buildings, this is not the place for a happening Hawaii beach wedding. Without a doubt, my favorite is the pristine, 5-mile long, white sand beach across from Pukalani Falls Hawaii Wedding Garden in Angels Bay. This out-of-the-way beach is great for both sunrise and mid-day Hawaii beach weddings. The water is relatively shallow in this area. Consequently as the sun reflects off the white sandy bottom, the water color is an unbelievably brilliant turquoise. This amazing turquoise color, contrasted with the powdery blue sky, makes it my top pick for sunrise and mid-day Hawaii beach weddings. This picturesque beach is always picture perfect and just can’t be beat.
Pukalani Falls Hawaii Wedding Garden is ultimate story book location for weddings in Hawaii. In Hawaiian, Pukalani means “Gateway to Heaven”. It is said that a picture speaks a thousand words. So let the photos of these fairytale Hawaii weddings speak for themselves. In our Photo Gallery, check out Pukalani Falls Hawaii Wedding Garden.
This magnificent falls is surrounded by numerous varieties of exotic fruit trees, tropical flowers, palms, bamboos and other Hawaiian plants. It is truly a tropical wonderland for Hawaii weddings. For example there are bananas, papayas, guavas, mangos, coconuts, orchids, passion fruit… and the list goes on. Pukalani Falls Hawaii Wedding Garden is literally a bride and groom’s “Dream Come True”.
*Tropical Water Garden*
When you first enter this Hawaii wedding dreamland through the ornate teak and copper gates, the first words out of your mouth will be something like “Wow” or “Oh my God”. You will have just entered the tropical water garden which is almost a psychedelic experience. You will know immediately why this is the Mecca for weddings in Hawaii. Two separate bubbling brooks flow into a tropical water garden which is literally teaming with brightly colored Koi fish and colorful water lilies. The Koi are very personable and genuinely enjoy being present at our Hawaii weddings. Koi have been revered in eastern cultures for centuries. They are a symbol of long life, virility and nonviolence. Koi have been known to live in excess of 225 years and they can bear literally millions of young. Consequently, as part of our Hawaii weddings, those couples who are so inclined, ring the dinner bell to call the Koi – and feed them their dinner.
*Hawaii Weddings and Privacy*
Pukalani Falls Hawaii Wedding Garden is totally private. Rest assured, there will never be a busload of over zealous tourists arriving to spoil these most intimate Weddings in Hawaii. We are practically like “Hawaii Wedding Cops”, securing the privacy of our Hawaii weddings. It seems like our Japanese tourists have developed some kind of special radar for seeking out weddings in Hawai – in progress. Just as you are about to make your sacred Hawaii wedding vows, how would you like to glance over and see a mad pack of these intruders looking on. Picture them with all their electronic gizmos aimed directly at you, intent on adding your mug to their cherished prize of “Weddings in Hawaii”, caught on film. If you find this attractive, try any of the public venues like parks and hotels etc. You’re sure to find some of the McWedding companies are arranging their fast-food brand of “Weddings in Hawaii”. At Pukalani Falls Garden, the privacy of our Hawaii weddings is a sure deal!
*Exotic Parrots attend our Hawaii Weddings*
What garden wedding in Hawaii would be complete without beautiful parrots? Pukalani Falls Hawaii Wedding Garden is the home of several gorgeous parrots sporting iridescent red, blue, green, orange and yellow colors. Yes, our parrots talk and love posing with the bride and groom. This adds a nice splash on humor in our Hawaii Weddings photographs and videos. Our most rascal parrot A.J., likes to partake in our Hawaii weddings by drinking from our couples toasting glass.
*Natural Hawaii Wedding Music** at Pukalani Falls*
Most Hawaii weddings begin with playing the usual corny “Here comes the Bride”. At Pukalani Falls Hawaii Wedding Garden your background music is the enchanting sounds of the waterfall and the cooing of the wild Hawaiian doves living in our garden. They are our official Hawaii wedding singers. Face it, how many times can you listen to “Here comes the Bride” before you need some Excedrin?
*Mix Your Waterfall and Hawaii Beach Wedding Photos*
To add to all this beauty of our weddings in Hawaii, directly across the road from the Pukalani Falls Hawaii Wedding Garden, are the spectacular white sand beaches of Angels Bay. After photographing and perhaps videotaping lots of cool footage at the falls, our couples often like to take a stroll over to the beach for additional magic photo opportunities. This adds even more unbelievable variety to their weddings in Hawaii.
Your actual Hawaii Wedding Ceremony can take place at the Falls or on the Beach – Your Choice
Depending on the spontaneity of your mood, you can choose either the garden or the beach for your dream come true Hawaii wedding ceremony!
*Pukalani Falls Hobbit House*
Nestled within the magical Pukalani Falls Hawaii Wedding Gardens is the Amazing Hobbit House. This is the abode where Capt. Howie and Deva reside. This adds even more spectacular photo opportunities for our waterfall garden weddings in Hawaii. In the unlikely event of rain we often perform our Hawaii weddings on the veranda overlooking Pukalani Falls or inside the Hobbit House, within a huge atrium with the doors open to the outside Hawaii wedding gardens. If you know anything about Murphy’s Law, it never hurts to have a backup plan for rain… even when planning weddings in Hawaii
